Most clients have a clear sense of purpose during their working years. But what happens next? Figuring out when to retire, what retirement will look like, and what to do with the rest of our lives can be unclear and even a bit scary for many.

It used to be that most people retired around 65, collected Social Security, enrolled in Medicare, and lived on their pension income and savings for 10 to 15 years. With people living longer, they are rethinking the traditional view of retirement and what that means to them.

Did you know that today at least one 65-year old spouse has a 50% chance of living to 94 years old?

Key Numbers in 2017

We ring in 2017 with our annual Key Numbers update for the coming year. In this month’s article, we will bring you up-to-date on both the small numbers, such as a the modest Social Security cost-of-living adjustment of 0.3%, to the large numbers such as the new threshold reached for the Maryland estate tax exemption which will increase to $3,000,000 next year. Retirement planning Most of the retirement planning numbers will remain unchanged for the coming year as outlined below.  The popular 401(k) and similar retirement plans will allow a maximum $18,000 contribution next year for those who have enough earned income.Those individuals age 50 and older before the end of the tax year may include am additional $6,000 catch-up contribution for a total of $24,000 tax-deferred contribution towards retirement.
